What Is a Missile? Here’s The Definition, Types and How They Work

UNGKIT.COM – A missile is a guided projectile—specifically, a military rocket weapon equipped with an automated guidance system to accurately locate and strike a target.

Unlike standard rockets, which travel freely without the ability to adjust their course after launch, missiles contain internal computer systems or sensors that allow them to alter their flight path to hit the target precisely.

The first guided missiles used in combat operations were German missiles deployed during World War II. The most famous of these were the V-1 and V-2. Both utilized simple autopilot systems to maintain their flight path and stay on a pre-determined route.

Missile systems have evolved alongside technological advancements, spanning the World War II era, the post-WWII period, the Cold War, the post-Cold War era, and up to the present day.

Currently, there are three main types of missiles: ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and hypersonic missiles.

Ballistic missiles soar high into the atmosphere along a parabolic trajectory before rapidly diving down toward their target.

In contrast, cruise missiles fly at low altitudes—skimming the ground or water—to evade enemy radar detection.

Meanwhile, hypersonic missiles—true to their name—travel at extremely high speeds, exceeding Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. (*)
