UNGKIT.COM – Based on the latest user data, these are the most popular and widely used social media platforms globally and in Indonesia—ranging from social networking and messaging services to short-form video platforms.

Globally, in terms of monthly active users, the largest social media platforms are led by the Meta ecosystem. The ranking is topped by Facebook, followed by YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok.

Facebook
Accessible via any device with an internet connection—such as personal computers, tablets, and smartphones—Facebook holds the top spot with over 3 billion monthly active users worldwide.

Facebook is an online social media and networking platform that allows users to connect with one another, share content (photos, videos, and status updates), and interact with friends, family, and the global community.

Key features of Facebook include the News Feed and status updates—where users can post text, links, photos, and videos—as well as Messenger, a tool for private or group instant messaging.

There is also Facebook Marketplace, an online space for buying and selling new or used goods, and Groups and Fanpages, which serve as hubs for communities with shared interests or as official pages for businesses.

Additionally, there is Facebook Ads, a paid advertising service used to promote products or content to specific target audiences.

YouTube
YouTube, Google’s video platform, has over 2.5 billion active users worldwide. Like other social media platforms, it can be accessed from any device with an internet connection, including personal computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Created in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees, this American video-sharing website allows users to upload, watch, and share videos.

There is a wide variety of YouTube content, ranging from news, tutorials, and DIY (Do It Yourself) projects to daily vlogs, product reviews and unboxings, educational and scientific content, culinary and travel-related material, entertainment and comedy, as well as music and the arts.

WhatsApp
WhatsApp is an instant messaging service with approximately 2 billion active users worldwide. Owned by Meta, it is an application that provides free instant messaging, voice calls, and video calls, all of which operate via an internet connection.

The primary functions of WhatsApp include: messaging (sending text, emojis, documents, photos, and videos, either privately or in groups); voice and video calls (conducting phone or face-to-face communication online via VoIP); status updates (sharing text, photos, or short videos that automatically disappear after 24 hours); and communities.

Instagram
Instagram is a photo and video-sharing platform with approximately 2 billion active users worldwide. It is a visually-oriented social media service owned by Meta Platforms that allows users to upload, edit, and share photos and videos.

Key features of Instagram include photo and video sharing, Instagram Stories, Reels, Direct Messages (DM), as well as filters and hashtags (#).

Instagram serves various functions, such as facilitating social interaction—connecting friends, family, and communities from across the globe.

Furthermore, it is used by businesses for e-commerce, promotions, and brand building. It also serves as a source of inspiration and a reference point for lifestyle, hobbies, art, and visual news.

TikTok
TikTok is a rapidly growing platform, currently boasting over 1.5 billion active users globally. It is a social media application and digital platform originating from China, developed by ByteDance.

TikTok enables users to create, edit, and share videos ranging from a few seconds to 60 minutes in length, enhanced with music, filters, and special effects.

Key functions and features of TikTok include creative content production, TikTok Shop (e-commerce), and TikTok LIVE—a live-streaming feature that allows creators to interact with their audience and build a community.

Social Media Platforms with the Largest User Bases in Indonesia

In Indonesia, according to reports from DataReportal and various digital research institutions, the social media platforms with the highest penetration—or the largest number of users—are WhatsApp, followed by TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

WhatsApp is the most widely used platform in terms of adoption, reaching approximately 90% to 90.8% of internet users on a monthly basis.

TikTok leads in terms of daily watch time, with users spending an average of nearly 2 hours per day on the platform, which also sees a very high frequency of access. Indonesia is home to one of the largest user bases in the world, with over 126 million users.

Instagram remains a primary application for visual sharing and daily communication, whether through photos or videos.

Facebook boasts a large, multi-generational user base. Beyond posting status updates—which can include text, photos, or videos—users can also communicate directly with one another via Messenger.

YouTube serves as a hub for long-form video content. The platform allows users to upload, watch, and share videos. (*)
