Egyptian Pyramids: Megaprojects Along The Nile

UNGKIT.COM – The Egyptian pyramids are ancient, triangular stone structures that served as tombs for kings—or Pharaohs—and their queens.

Beyond their function as tombs, these structures symbolized power and served as a pathway for the Pharaoh's soul to ascend and join the sun god.

The three most famous complexes are located at Giza: the Pyramid of Khufu (the Great Pyramid), the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure.

Almost all pyramids in Egypt are situated on the west bank of the Nile, a direction ancient Egyptians associated with the setting sun or the land of the dead.

The Egyptian pyramids were constructed during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods of ancient Egypt, primarily between 4,500 and 5,000 years ago.

These colossal projects were carried out by tens of thousands of Egyptians—including farmers and skilled laborers—who were paid for their work, rather than by slaves.

Pyramid construction involved the use of millions of limestone and granite blocks, arranged with astronomical precision and exacting accuracy.

The earliest pyramids built by the ancient Egyptians were "step pyramids." Constructed during Egypt's Third Dynasty, the step pyramid was designed by the architect Imhotep as a tomb for the Pharaoh Djoser.

It was built in the 27th century BC (around 2630 BC) at the Saqqara necropolis, northwest of the city of Memphis. This first Egyptian pyramid consisted of several *mastabas* (flat-roofed rectangular structures) stacked upon one another.

At the time of its construction, the Pyramid of Djoser stood 62 meters (204 feet) tall and was encased in white limestone. This step pyramid is considered the first large-scale stone structure ever built. 

The most famous Egyptian pyramids are located on the Giza Plateau on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt; among them is the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the largest Egyptian pyramid and the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that remains relatively intact.

Several of the pyramids at Giza rank among the largest structures ever built. The site also houses the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure, completing the trio of major pyramids within the Giza pyramid complex. (*)
