Colosseum, a Historic Building in Rome

UNGKIT.COM - The Colosseum, or Colosseum, is a giant oval-shaped amphitheater in Rome, Italy, built in the 1st century AD by the Roman Empire. As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, this historic building was once used for gladiatorial performances and wild animal hunts.

The Colosseum's original name was Amphitheatrum Flavium (Flavian Amphitheater). The term "Colosseum" came into use because of its proximity to the giant statue of the Colossus of Nero.

Construction began during the reign of Emperor Vespasian between 70 and 72 AD, was completed by his son Titus in 80 AD, and expanded by Domitian.

The arena's initial function was as a public entertainment center for the Roman Empire, capable of accommodating 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The area beneath the arena floor (hypogeum) consisted of a labyrinth, tunnels, animal pens, and elevators used for preparing for performances.

The amphitheater is approximately 48-50 meters high, 189 meters long, and 156 meters wide, making it the largest amphitheater in the world. It is constructed of travertine limestone, volcanic rock, and brick-clad concrete. It features a system of 80 entrances, allowing for quick entry and exit for spectators.

Today, the Colosseum is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Many tourists from various countries come to Rome to visit this historic building. (*)
