UNGKIT.COM – By definition, an Ethnicity is a classification of human beings based on shared origins, cultural identity, language, customs, history, and kinship ties.
Another way to define an Ethnicity is as a collection of people who identify with one another based on shared attributes that distinguish them from other groups.
These attributes may include country of origin, lineage, traditions, language, history, society, religion, or social behavior.
Genetic Lineage and Inheritance
The roots of an ethnic group—or ethnicity—lie in the factors that form the basis of a group's ethnic identity. The term ethnicity is often used interchangeably with "nation," particularly in the context of ethnic nationalism.
Ethnicity can be understood as an inherited construct. Ethnic membership is typically determined by cultural heritage, ancestry, origins, history, homeland, language, dialect, religion, mythology, folklore, rituals, cuisine, style of dress, art, or physical appearance.
Ethnicity may share genetic lineages—whether within a narrow or broad scope—depending on how the group defines itself; most contemporary groups possess genetic lineages resulting from historical intermixing.
Examples of Ethnicity globally include the Chinese, Arabs, Persians, Bengalis, Uyghurs, Zulu, Bantu, Aboriginal peoples, Māori, Maya, Inca/Quechua, among others.
Examples of Ethnicity in Indonesia (Southeast Asia) include the Javanese, Sundanese, Batak, Minangkabau, Dayak, Asmat, and others. (*)
