UNGKIT.COM – Race is a system of categorizing humans into specific groups based on inherited physical or biological traits, such as skin color, facial features, hair texture, and body structure.

The term "race" is derived from the French-Italian word "razza", which means "root" or refers to the differentiation of population variations. According to the KBBI—Indonesian Dictionary, a race is a group of people distinguished by physical characteristics or ethnic lineage.

In modern sociology, race is also viewed as a social construct shaped by history and human interaction. Generally, human races worldwide are classified into several major groups: Mongoloid, Caucasoid, Negroid, and Australoid.

Mongoloid: Characterized by skin tones ranging from yellow to light brown, straight or black hair, and eyes that tend to be narrow (epicanthic folds). This group is primarily distributed across Asia and the Americas.

Caucasoid: Characterized by fair or light-colored skin, a prominent or high-bridged nose, and wavy or straight hair. This group is primarily distributed throughout Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.

Negroid: Characterized by dark skin, curly hair, full lips, and a broad nose. This group is primarily distributed throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

Australoid: Characterized by skin tones ranging from dark brown to blackish, and wavy or curly hair. This group is primarily found among indigenous populations in parts of India, Australia (Aboriginal peoples), and Papua.

Races in Indonesia

Indonesia possesses a diversity of races, shaped by its geographical location, history of migration, and interactions with foreign peoples.

The races present in Indonesia include the Malayan-Mongoloid, Melanesoid, Asiatic-Mongoloid, Caucasoid, and Veddoid groups.

Malayan-Mongoloid: The primary racial group dominating the regions of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Bali (subdivided into Proto-Malay and Deutero-Malay).

Melanesoid: Characterized by dark skin and curly hair; widely distributed across the regions of Papua, the Moluccas (Maluku), and East Nusa Tenggara.

Asiatic-Mongoloid: Racial groups of Asian descent—such as Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans—who reside in various cities throughout Indonesia.

Caucasoid: Racial groups of Middle Eastern, Indian, or European descent, who also form part of Indonesia’s multicultural society.

Veddoid: A racial group with a small stature and wavy hair, represented by several indigenous tribes, such as the Kubu, Sakai, and Tomuna peoples. (*)
