UNGKIT.COM – The automotive market in Indonesia continues to show positive growth, supported by high domestic demand and the expansion of electric vehicles.
Currently, the Indonesian automotive market is dominated by Japanese brands, followed by manufacturers from South Korea, Europe, and the United States, alongside a strong influx of brands from China.
Japanese Brands
Japanese brands hold the largest market share in Indonesia, thanks to their extensive after-sales networks, the ready availability of spare parts, and strong resale value.
Japanese car brands present in the market include Toyota (the national market leader), Daihatsu, Honda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Isuzu (which holds a strong position in the commercial vehicle segment), Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, and Lexus (a luxury brand).
Chinese Brands
A new wave of Chinese car brands is experiencing rapid growth, driven primarily by electric vehicles (EVs) and modern SUVs.
Chinese car brands in the market include BYD (which has reached the top tier, ranking among the top three in sales), Wuling, Chery, Jaecoo (which has entered the top 10), Jetour, MG (Morris Garages), DFSK, GWM (Great Wall Motor/Haval), and Aion.
South Korean Brands
Prominent car brands from South Korea include Hyundai and Kia. Both Hyundai and Kia belong to the same South Korean automotive conglomerate—Hyundai Motor Group—and therefore often share mechanical platforms and engines. Nevertheless, each brand possesses distinct characteristics and advantages.
Key strengths of Hyundai vehicles include futuristic designs, smart connectivity technology, and a comprehensive suite of comfort and safety features for their respective classes.
Meanwhile, Kia offers its own set of advantages that make it an attractive choice in the automotive market. Hyundai, the largest car manufacturer in South Korea, is well-known for various models such as the Creta, Stargazer, and the electric vehicle Ioniq 5.
Meanwhile, Kia—now part of the Hyundai Motor Group—offers popular models including the Seltos, Sonet, and Carnival.
European and American Brands
European car brands are renowned for their luxury, high-precision engineering, smooth engine performance, and the prestige they convey.
In contrast, American car brands are known for their large, robust bodies, high-displacement engines (such as V8s), and a bold, muscular character.
European and American automotive brands present in Indonesia include BMW & Mini, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen (VW), Audi, Porsche, Ford & Jeep, and Citroën.
Indonesian Brands
Several local—or Indonesian-made—car brands developed by domestic manufacturers include Esemka and Fin Komodo.
Esemka focuses on light commercial vehicles, such as the Esemka Bima 1.2 and Esemka Bima 1.3 (available in pickup and cargo configurations).
Fin Komodo, on the other hand, produces UTVs (Utility Terrain Vehicles)—off-road vehicles that are 100% made in Indonesia. (*)
