What Is The Difference Between Gold and Precious Metals?

UNGKIT.COM – In reality, gold is a type of precious metal. While precious metal is a broad category, gold is one specific example within that category.

However, in everyday conversation in Indonesia, the term precious metal is often used specifically to refer to gold bars (pure 24-karat gold), distinguishing them from gold jewelry.

Precious metals (in this context, gold bars) are designed specifically for long-term investment and as a "safe haven" asset to hedge against inflation.

In contrast, gold jewelry is intended for personal use—serving as an accessory for one's appearance or lifestyle—though it can also be sold back (buyback).

Regarding purity (karatage), precious metals—or gold bars—have a high level of purity: 24 karats (99.99% pure), with no other metals added.

Gold jewelry, on the other hand, has a lower level of purity—typically ranging from 16, 17, and 18 to 22 karats (approximately 70%–91% pure). It is intentionally mixed with other metals, such as copper, silver, or nickel, to increase its hardness and prevent it from easily losing its shape.

In terms of physical form, precious metals are minted as plates, coins, or bars—such as those produced by Antam, UBS, or Galeri 24—and come with a serial number and an official certificate.

Gold jewelry, meanwhile, is crafted into various lifestyle accessories, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

Regarding manufacturing costs and resale value (buyback), precious metals do not incur manufacturing fees; therefore, their resale value is calculated solely based on their weight in grams and the current daily market price.

Conversely, gold jewelry includes a manufacturing fee—typically around 10%–20% of the purchase price. When resold, its value is often reduced—potentially by 25% or more—to account for melting costs and design factors. (*)
